I published my first typeface as a single style: Vollkorn Regular. Due to the fact that it was my first try and I had no clue whether it was good or not and also after the example of Yanone’s »Kaffeesatz« I released it under a Creative Commons License CC-BY, for free. In 2010 I got a query from the emerging Google Fonts team. They asked me to upgrade Vollkorn to a four style family and publish it under the Open Font License for Google’s new webfont server. And while they paid some dollars I did it. »Vollkorn« [pronounce ‘follkorn’] is German for “wholemeal”. It refers to the old term “Brotschrift” [literally ‘bread type’] which described the small fonts for every day use in the days of hand-compositing. When the first letters were drawn in 2005 I noticed that my “Brotschrift” got quite dark, sturdy and grainy. Have a guess why I chose »Vollkorn«!
